Regalia
The term regalia come from the Latin neuter plural of regalis (âof a kingâ), from rex (âkingâ). Originally regalia are thus the emblems or insignia of royalty, especially the ceremonial cloak, crown, orb, sceptre, and other ornaments used at a coronation. The term has been borrowed and came to be used by church, civic, military, politic, and Masonic fraternities. In the military context, regalia include strong symbols immediately comprehensible and impressive to all. These distinctive military tokens include ornaments and insignia (badge, cuff band, emblem, clasp, clip, pin, button, brooch, colour of service, piping, etcâ¦) which are carried, worn, sewn or attached to a uniform as an official indication of nationality, status, rank and authority, speciality, qualification, branch of service, achievement, etc. Military insignia were and still are intended to establish clear differentiation between ranks and types of service, and at the same time to encourage individual combat efficiency and proficiency in military arts. Direct appeal was/is made to vanity, and to the human tendency to brag, boast, and show off military prowess as expressed in terms of insignia and decorations. Many Second World War insignia were based on traditional and historical German military regalia, with the addition of several specific Nazi features.
